Hinsdale County is located in the mid-southwester part of Colorado. It is the smallest County in Colorado with 570 year round residents. It is approximately 97% public lands and 46% wilderness. The second largest natural lake in Colorado is located in Hinsdale County. It was formed naturally about 700 years ago by the Slumgullion Mountain Earthflow, which blocked the Gunnison River, causing the formation of the lake. There are five mountains over 14,000 feet in Hinsdale.
